Chiropractic Care
Chiropractic is a health care profession that focuses primarily on disorders of the musculoskeletal and nervous systems. Doctors of chiropractic practice a drug-free, hands-on approach to health care that includes examination, diagnosis and treatment. Chiropractors also provide patients with therapeutic and rehabilitative exercises, ergonomic advice as well as nutritional and dietary counseling.
The most common treatment provided by chiropractors is “spinal manipulation”, or “spinal adjustment”. The purpose of this procedure is to restore joint mobility by manually applying a controlled force into a joint that is restricted from movement. These restrictions can be a result of an injury, repetitive stress or poor physical posture over an extended period of time. Manipulation of the affected joint and tissues restores mobility and therefore alleviates pain and muscle tightness, enhancing the healing process. Chiropractors always assess the patient to determine if chiropractic care is appropriate and often work in conjunction with other members of the health care team to provide the patient with the best possible care.
Most often, people go to chiropractors the first time for relief from back pain. However, chiropractors treat a broad range of complaints from back and neck pain to headaches, arthritis and more. Moreover, people do not need to have a specific complaint to benefit from a visit. Chiropractors also aid in providing on-going preventative and wellness care. Chiropractic care is effective for people of all ages, from infants to elderly.
